I got a new tattoo on my right thigh at the NYC Tattoo Convention yesterday. Here it is in progress ~

And after 2 1/2 hours, the finished product:

It's still rather red and puffy and SORE, but I am very happy with it.
Here's a shot of the artist, Kody of Outer Limits Tattoo of Costa Mesa, California.

Tmak,
Now that's a fan! Looks really good. I do not have any tatoos, but that is a very nice one I must say. Thanks for sharing. Nice pic of the Artiste too.

Looks ever so painful T!...
..but the tattooist has achieved an amazing likeness to the pic.
You are a true blue Dusty Fan... No question.
So, would you like to tell us more about the convention?

I'm not really a fan of tatoos, and the girl in the picture for me has ruined her body...and such a pretty girl too. The Dusty tatoo is really good though...bet it was bloody painful I knew a chap once who had a Jenson Intersceptor tatood on his w*lly, but it the cold weather it looked more like a Reliant Robin

Okay, Carole, here's a bit about the tattoo and the convention ~
My friend Shannon and I meet once a year at Grand Central Station and trek to the Roseland Ballroom to attend the NYC International Tattoo Convention. One or the other (or both) of us usually get some work done. If not, it's just fun schmoozing with the attendees and the artists from all over the world. They come in all shapes, sizes, ages and colors, and all are very friendly - eager to have their artwork admired.
I usually bring 2 or 3 potential tat pictures with me in case I find an artist that I think will do justice to them. With the portrait, I was VERY finicky. Portrait tats can come out fabulous if you find an artist who specializes in them. If the artist doesn't get the tattoo to look like the subject in the picture, you are stuck with a bad tattoo for life.
When I perused Kody's picture album of work she had done, I was won over. A 3/4 profile tattoo of Kurt Cobain was the one that did it for me. I showed her the Dusty picture and told her a bit about Dusty. I emphasized to her that it wouldn't be Dusty without 'THE EYES'. Kody thanked me for allowing her to do the tattoo and asked me if she could embellish it a bit. I told her to embellish away as the b&w picture didn't show very much facial detail.
It took her 2 1/2 hour and I think she did a terrific job in capturing the Dusty look. (I had seen a picture of one other Dusty tattoo. It was a good line drawing, but it didn't really look like Dusty to me.) Kody and I were VERY pleased with the results. She asked if I could stick around til later that night and enter it in the 'Tattoos of the Day' contest, but it was 6:30pm when she finished, and we wanted to head out and get some food. No reentries into the convention were allowed without paying again. It's too bad cuz I think it might have won a prize. Several artists and passers-by admired it while it was in the works, and a few took pictures of the completed work.
So that's my Dusty tat story.

You're very trusting, I don't think I could do it! Glad it turned out great though Ouch, I've just seen she had tattoos on her knuckles, that must've killed! I want a tattoo, but I just daren't risk it going wrong!

Thanks for the brilliant story, T..
I'm sure it would have won a prize had you entered the Comp later in the day. After all, what could be as good as that?..
Did your friend have any work done?
... Have you got any other pics of the Convention?
...and did you get to the Shrimp shop?..

As tattoos go the Dusty one is very well done but I am not a lover of tattoos and I can never understand why people want to cover their bodies with them - especially the face, neck and hands - when it's a woman it seems even worse.
I often wonder if they were born looking like that would they want plastic surgery to remove it?
Anyway, each to his/her own ! |

To answer your questions, Carole ~
No, Shannon didn't get any work done on Saturday, but she did meet an artist from NYC who she plans on visiting in the near future. And I didn't take any more pictures at the convention.
We couldn't get into Bubba Gump's Shrimp Company restaurant for our annual 'after-tat' nosh cuz the line waiting to get in was around the block. Times Square at 6:30pm on a Saturday night is a mob scene.
BUT, even better! We rode the subway to Harlem and headed to the famous Sylvia's Restaurant where I met my culinary idol, Miss Sylvia -The Queen of Soul Food herself!! What a thrill that was! (I was surprised how TINY she is! She was on her toes and I was crouching down for this picture.)

Here's a shot of me with some of Sylvia's warm, buttered cornbread. Mmmmm... (Those of you who were at Jonathan's pre-Dusty Day noshes are familiar with that yummy stuff. It's become an annual tradition, by request of Miz Madeline.)

And here's Shannon digging into the appetizers - mini-salmon cakes and coconut shrimp ~

A soul food masterpiece, washed down with South Carolina Rum Punch

Shannon added the grilled salmon to her greens and mac & cheese.

Totally pigged out - and lovin' it!

Dusty, tattoos and Soul Food - what a fine day!

Trek -
We put light coatings of A&D ointment (marketed for use on diaper rash) on a new tattoo for 3 days. The puffiness and the 'rosey pink glow' subside by the second day. The top layer of skin will start to peel as it heals.
After 3 days, a skin moisturizing lotion is liberally applied several times a day for the next 2 weeks. At this point, if the skin dries out it feels like a bad sunburn, so you must keep it moist.
