I have been recently hearing that there were various Dusty gathering going back to the the early 80's, if not even earlier, much to my surprise. Obviously Dusty was still with us at the time.

Frans, Rep, or perhaps someone else who was there could possibly fill me in on what these gatherings were like?

Thanks.

Marty

I was at two, one in Blackpool where I met Frans (it seems a lifetime ago) and the other was on a boat on the Thames and that was when I met Simon Bell - both were organised by Lynn Jackson.

The Blackpool gathering was the last one I went to and that's when I saw the RAH concert for the first time.

Thanks Rep!

How many of these meetings did take place and at what other locations. Anyone?

I went to several of those gatherings. There were a couple at an amazing flat on Holland Park Avenue, one on a boat on the Thames (Simon was particularly 'lively' as I recall), one or two at the YMCA at the end of Oxford Street and one at The Entertainer pub in the Balls Pond Road. The first couple of events were great fun, if a little weird. We all turned up thinking we were the only people on the planet who still liked Dusty. That's how it felt anyway. It was as if we were all going 'She's fantastic. She's the BEST!' and yet no one was buying her records. Somewhere I have some photos that I took at the first one. I'll try to dig them out.

Your comments about you thought you were the only one in the planet that still liked Dusty and no one was buying her records....so sad and even disturbing.

It was just that we'd had a long period when Dusty had been nowhere to be seen. No TV appearances and just the occasional bit of airplay on the radio. All of my friends, without exception, thought it was very uncool to like Dusty.

Then the reformed fan club came into being (set up by Steve Percival and then Lynne Jackson) and only a small number of people joined it. It was like being part of a tiny minority group. Some of us wrote to each other as pen friends (remember this was all pre-internet/email etc.), but we felt fairly isolated really. If you received a letter from one of your pen friends, perhaps with a cassette tape of some rare performance, you'd be in seventh heaven! HOwever, it was all a bit fragmented. I think that was why Lynne decided to hold these fan club parties in the first place. The first one was strange; probably 30-40 people from all sorts of backgrounds with one thing in common - Dusty! It really was like 'Oh so you really like her too. I thought it was just me!'

I was terribly shy back then. I used to hide in a corner, taking photos from a distance and not speaking to many people at all. I think that can be quite a good thing when you're a photographer. You definitely get better shots that way. That was my excuse anyway...but basically I was really, really shy! I think I remember you Frans. A real livewire! Lots of hair? BIG hair? Am I right?

Thanks Tony and Franz. Do you have any idea how many of these meetings Dusty actually attended? I completely lost touch with Dusty during the 80's myself. Whenever I heard anyone with a British accent, I would always stop them and ask if they could tell me anything about Dusty Springfield, because I am a huge fan. I had no idea that she was living in LA much of this time.

See certainly went to two of them. At The Entertainer pub and another much later, when she sang with Simon.
