Thanks to Marea for reminding us of this:
Memorial Day is a United States Federal Holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May (observed in 2008 on May 26). It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it was expanded to include those who died in any war or military action

I did wonder if the USA had a day similar to our (UK) rememberance day on the 11th November.....in Britain the last Monday in May is also a Bank holiday which used to be known as Whitsun (it still is to me!) now it's just called Spring bank holiday
Carole, do they still have a 'Whit-week walk' in Manchester?.....it's been mentioned in early episodes of the soap Coronation Street that I've seen in recent years, the focus of the walk is Albert Square, but the 'walk' never seems to be mentioned nowadays!

Hi all and thanks Carole for explaining what Memorial Day is for us. I appreicate that and probably should have included a little history as well. Thanks Marty is totally right as we too have another type of Remembrance Day in Veterans day which is observed in November. I have been a bit busy these last several days. I took off from work to join a few friends in Annapolis, Maryland (Which is where the Maryland Capital is). It is by the water. South River and the Chesapeake Bay. This week was Commission Week where the young Men & Women graduate from the U.S. Naval Academey. We ate seafood and watched as these young people in their Whites walked around Annapolis. They are fine specimens. It was great. We saw Sail boats and Yachts, and speed boats, (Cigarette Boats) and Sail boat races. You'd love it. Drank, martinis, Champagne, Wine (not all at once). Lots of quaint shops, pubs and restaurants. Only 45-50 drive from my home. This morning and speaking of Memorial Day, I bought some beautiful Tiger Lilys and other pretty Lilys to my Mom's gravesite. When I drove up to the gate a guy was handing out the American Flag (small w/ a small wood pole) for your loved ones site and a survey on "how are we doing with perpetual care". Beautiful day today and forcasted for the entire weekend. It will be marked cooking outside on the grill and some fireworks and plenty of Flags. On another note - I have not been feeling well lately. For the last few weeks my stomach has been hurting especially after I eat. No fever, but nausea. I have a test Tuesday morning - sonogram of the gall bladder, liver, pancreas. Let you know how I am doing. I am normally a pretty healthy person. Hope all is well. Take care - Have a good weekend everyone. Love, Marea

Thanks for that info, Marty.
You may know as Mark says that we have the UK Rememberance Day, sometimes known as Poppy Day, in November.
Re Whitsun, Mark.... Yes I do remember the Whit Walks in Manchester, although I never took part in them I remember waving at the 'Scholars' as they walked by.
I'm not sure whether they still 'do' the Whitwalks or not to be honest with you, Mark.
If they do, they must be very low profile.

Sounds like a good time was had by all, Marea!..I'm extremely jealous!...Only joking... Glad you had fun.xx

Our little fife and drum corps, The Spirit Of Black Rock, is going to march in two Memorial Day parades this weekend - one in Stamford tomorrow, followed by a picnic at our Fife Sgt's home and one in my hometown of Bridgeport on Monday.
Doing some last minute memorizing of some Civil War medleys tonite. Most of the members of the corps have DECADES of practice on these 30+ songs, but I only joined up last year and am playing catch up as far as memorization goes. (I do have one advantage over most of them - I can read music.)

Sorry you aren't feeling well Pandy. In the beginning of April I passed a kidney stone. Had slight nausea and the worst lower back pain you can imagine. I'd say it was equal to having a baby. My sonogram showed I also have gall bladder stones. KNOCK ON WOOD, THEY AREN'T BOTHERING ME VERY MUCH. Hope you feel better soon.
Carole you often see Veteran's selling small artificial poppy flowers around Veteran's Day and Memorial Day.

Thanks Marty. Sorry you've had that going on... yeah, I have heard of numerous people w/ Kidney stones & Gall bladder issues. A lot of adults get their Gall bladder removed (100's of thousands per year in the US alone) I am told. In fact, my brother-in-law had his Gall bladder removed laproscopically last Wed. He's fine and recuping, but had pain before surgery. It just stopped working the doc said, don't know why, but had to come out because he lost about 15 pounds and was sick. Stay on top of it Marty and take good care.

Here's a shot of our little band before a very HOT parade this morning. We all gathered for a backyard picnic afterwards. Hopefully, tomorrow's weather will be a tad cooler.

Here's a couple of the hard-core Civil War Reenactors. Unlike our uniforms made from 'all them new-fangled materials', their outfits are constructed as they would have been in the 1860s.
Can you see 'Civil War Buff' Dusty in one of those outfits? But she couldn't sing Two Brothers because it isn't an authentic Civil War era song (written in the 1950s).
