I just came back from Las Vegas after spending a week there and had a fantastic time! One of my BEST vacations!
I'll start with Katy of course. I thought Katy had the roughest time on stage as many had no idea who Dusty Springfield is or even knew her songs. She seemed to warm up the crowd by the end of her opening song SOAPM. How could she not with that voice We had VIP front table center seats. I left a note with the box office with a picture of us taken at Dusty Day, telling her we are coming and she did watch for us. When she spotted us, she did a typical "Dusty Wave", as Dusty use to do on stage. She wore her blue gown that she wore on TV and looked lovely. She opened with SOAPM, I Only Want To Be With You, Wishin and Hopin and You Don't Have To Say You Love Me. She did Dusty proud!!! She was EXCELLENT!!!! Her hand movements were spot on and she is in excellent voice, what a set of lungs that lady has! If you can, PLEASE GO SEE HER AND LET HER KNOW YOU ARE THERE. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED and I know she would love to see her Dusty fans. We made posters welcoming her to Vegas and I took a marker and wrote "Superfan" on the back of one. She may not be Dusty, but she is the closest we are going to get while on earth. She sailed through YDHTSYLM with ease and made it look easy, I couldn't help but notice it brought tears to the audience. After the concert she motioned to us to come and see her.
There was a meet and greet. Everyone in the "Legends" concert was GREAT, I'll get into that in a minute. I spent a lot of time talking with Katy and asked if I could buy her a drink. She said she would love that, but could we possibly wait while she changed. We said of course. When she came out, still in Panda Eyes, she suggested a bar upstairs, which turned out to be closed. We took the escalator back downstairs and went to a bar that had Elvis Karaoke singers, that were not especially good. We pretty much ignored them and sat on the other side of the room. We chatted about all sort of things. She commented to me that she doesn't care about Dusty's personal life as it's all about the music. She said many fans wanted her to comment about Dusty's personal life but she has no interest in it. I told her I was pleased to hear that. I told her that earlier today I heard Dusty sing "I Only Want To Be With You" by the Bellagio Fountains, just before the show started. We also discussed various other shows in Vegas and lots of other things. I wanted to buy her a drink, but it turned out she bought my friend James and I drink as she knew the bartender. She introduced us to her Sax player and we finally said our good-byes. She went off to have a word with the Sax player.
We gave Katy a little Vegas Teddy Bear and told her I've been calling it Vegas Einstein! She came down to the bar holding him. I wanted to give her some flowers too, but I saw them in a hotel that was quite a distance from my hotel and was sure they would wilt in the 118 degree heat (not a typo).
Katy wanted us to return another night; my friend and I talked it over and decided not to. It was such a magical night that we both felt could not be duplicated. I do wish Katy much success and I hope she becomes a huge star in her own right.
Oh Katy also told me she is really looking forward to Dusty Day '09 :))
The name of the show is called "Legends" The impersonators were Jay Leno, Tina Turner, Blues Brothers, Dusty Springfield, and Elvis Presley. I thought the weakest link was the Blues Brothers, Katy agreed. Don't get me wrong, they still were very good. You could have just about sworn it was Jay Leno on stage and he was fantastic. Tina Turner was wonderful too, I was singing along to "What's Love Got To Do With It" and she came up to me saying you really know the song, doncha?
Elvis Presley kept on winking at me throughout the concert. He finally came up to me, took his scarf and whipped the sweat off of his face, kissed me and gave me the scarf, like Elvis use to do on stage. All the other woman were so jealous of me. :))
Will post a few pictures as I get more settled down and back to the same old routine.
Marty
PS. Just editing to add another comment. I heard some awful things about the Imperial Palace where Katy is performing. It's certainly NOT the best 5 star hotel in Vegas, but I didn't find it as bad as I heard either. It's on the implosion list. I asked Katy if she was doing ok there and she said they were treating her very well there. I told her that I was concerned that she is staying there and she said she was very happy there but agreed it's very old.

I am not much of a gambler or drinker, so while I was in Vegas I concentrated on seeing shows.
The first show I saw was Roseann Barr. She was very good, dirty but funny. It's Vegas, did you expect differently? She rotates shows with the Platters and the Marvelettes. We got to hear a bit of that show waiting on line for the Roseann show. Both groups sounded very good, but to be honest I don't think I'd spend my money on them. There was a meet and greet afterwards so I got a glimpse of them. These shows were in the Sahara Hotel. WHAT A DIVE. I really felt unsafe there. It's surrounded by imploded vacant buildings. There was a McDonalds on the highway about 1/4 of a block away and the Stratosphere was about two blocks away. It's the extreme North end of Vegas. Without going into any details the Stratosphere has an awful reputation.
The next day we went on a tour of Hoover Dam and a cruise on Lake Mead, which was lovely. Afterwards we stopped in Ethel's Chocolate Factory.....YUM!!!:)) In the evening we had a lovely meal in the Eiffel Tower, expensive but wonderful. Our table overlooked the Bellagio Fountains. We also went up to the top of the Eiffel Tower, what a view!
We also saw a free CBS upcoming TV program at MGM. It was based on a Britcom which was called My Worst Week Of My Life, the American version is just called My Worst Week. It was fun and free! Not much is free in Vegas and certainly NOT cheap!
We also went to see the show Price Is Right, which was a lot of fun. No we didn't get called to "Come on Down". Not sure if the TV is known outside of the US, but it's America's oldest game show where contestants are called on stage to play a game and win huge prizes.
We saw The Blue Man Group at the Venetian. What a show, very unique. That theater had incredible acoustics.
I also heard Shelby Lynne sing "Anyone Had A Heat" in various casinos and at the airport when I just landed.
Our last night we saw Elton John at Caesar's Palace. He was excellent. Although the show had it's dark moments. There was a huge screen behind the stage, more or less portraying his life with a suicide scene included. It did make me wonder if Elton was feeling a bit dark when he was preparing the show, or did he just want to be extremely open about his life. Don't get me wrong, he was FANTASTIC. We finished the night with a lovely Hibachi meal. It was time to return home the next day. :(

Yes Dave she did. Actually "Jay Leno" who introduced her did. They showed her winning on "The One and Only" on two big video screens on each side of the stage.

Speaking of which, has only recording all "The One and Only" shows out there and have the capability of putting it on a PAL DVD (can play PAL DVD, not not video. I will gladly pay your expenses for a copy.
Thank you.
Marty
PS. BTW, Katy told me that all her up coming CDS will be available on her website. |

Thanks Marty for sharing your experiences and comments- both about Katy and Las Vegas in general. I'm thrilled Katy is enjoying herself out there, and like Trek, am now waiting to see her in concert over here in September- I can't wait! I'll be sure to let her know I'm supporting her- although I doubt whether we will be able to take in posters...
I was sad to read about how long you said it took her to get the audience going in LV though - how can anyone say they have NEVER EVER heard of Dusty Springfield??? Like you also said Marty, Katy may not be Dusty, but she is (to me anyway)the closest we may ever get. I'm looking forward to seeing your pics .
Thanks again for posting!

It really did not take long to be the audience going, by the end of the first song I thing she had the audience in her hands. After the ooncert many people in the audience were curious to know how I got to know Katy, what the posters said, what did superfan mean, etc. I am sure there were some Dusty Springfield fans in the audience, but I would guess the majority had no clue. On the other hand, I didn't exactly take a poll either! Heck I met an English couple that didn't know who she was, or even knew of the show "The One and Only"!!!! I minded my manners but was tempted to say what planet are you from

I'm pleased that you and James enjoyed your trip to Vegas..it sounds brilliant.
I've not got my ticket for one of Katy's Shows over here, but your review has reminded me that I should get a move on.

She really didn't talk about The One and Only. They showed her winning on a huge screen as I mentioned. She is enjoying Vegas and seems very happy.
