A 'Let's Talk Dusty' website member has posted some rare tracks which can be downloaded from www.you send it.com. You don't have to be a member of the Let's Talk Dusty site. They have been made freely available by a generous guy named Will. I know some of us are members of both sites so I hope it's OK to post this 'advert'.
For your easy access here's 'I'm Gonna Leave You' - this, for me, is the best track:
I had trouble with my Microsoft security which tried to block me getting into yousendit.com. If you get the same message I did, just choose to go straight to the site. Enjoy!
I immediately thought it must be Dusty - and she's good. Just looked in the great Paul Howes book. Dusty wrote the music and Madeline Bell and Leslie Duncan wrote the lyrics:
'A demo recording of the song is circulating among fans, featuring Dusty with guitar accompaniment and Madeline Bell on background vocals. Their performances are every bit as good as the finished studio recording'.
If I had a pristine recording of this demo I'd play it more than the studio version. I've loved this song ever since I head it on the 'Something Special' compilation. I still think that's Dusty on guitar. The backing vocals sound double tracked or like there is more than one singer (Lesley?). Working like this puts her streets ahead of her UK female contemporaries.
This has always been one of my favourite B sides and it's very interesting to hear this earlier demo despite the poor quality, it just shows there ARE other takes out there and I wonder who has this?
However, the version we know is far more polished but it's always interesting to hear alternate takes and it just shows how Dusty improved on the song.
