The 'wonderful' Kylie Minogue has a new single out...and it's more boring than her last three put together She obviously thinks she's the 'disco queen' as it's repetative, full of gimmicks and has no tune whatsover
When are the public going to wake up?
THIS IS DROSS OF THE FIRST ORDER

I know Kylie is an Aussie but I cannot stand her. She has no voice and only survives on show, not talent.

They were my exact thoughts when I heard it on the radio this morning!
Oh well, there are worse people who could've got it.

You'll be amazed to hear that I have no strong opinions on this topic!...

I went to see The Kylie 'Showgirl' Exhibition last year, and must admit to not realising that she'd be 'at the top' for over twenty years and sold millions of records.

I also think that she was probably an inspiration to many women suffering from that devastating condition called Breast Cancer.

She has mainly retained her 'Girl next door' image, despite her recent raunchy dance routines.

So, after going on the 'scenic route' I think I say " Good Luck, Kylie.. You deserve your OBE"... Like Sara so rightly says, there are far worse people who could have received it.

I admit to buying Kylie's recent hits cd as there were some good songs on it but I am not a huge fan.

She did look lovely receiving her OBE but I also wondered WHY? She's not British so why should she receive that award, also people like Dusty were in the business their whole life before receiving one and yes I can think of others who have contributed as much if not more, it's a strange business.

I haven't liked Kylie's last two singles, I wish she'd ditch the little girl voice and start sounding more mature and recording more sophisticated material.

She's sold loads of records and probably pays tax in the UK. Pop music helps prop up our doddery economy (it's one of our biggest exports). Kylie's been around for a long time now and is well loved here. As Carole says she's also a breast cancer survivor - thank goodness, and, that intensifies the love.

I loved 'Showgirl' and she's recorded a fair share of great pop singles but I wouldn't buy an album because her quality control isn't that good. I'm not a fan but I don't begrudge her the award. She's OK by me. Here she is in her prime with her video for 'Step Back in Time'. I agree she needs to move on from being a disco queen but she's stuck with that voice and image. She'll find a way.

I don't really care if she's sold millions of records...they are still CRAP!
Like the very over-rated Madonna she seems to manipulate the media, which I suppose is clever, but it's the MUSIC that really matters. Kylie sounds like at least 2 dozen other female 'singers' of recent years - THERE IS NO ORIGINALITY
We should be so lucky?

Oh well. It's just pop music after all. Kylie is pure pop and doesn't pretend to be anything more serious than that; she doesn't need to be 'original'. Here's one of my favourite Kylie hits. From 2002, 'Love At First Sight' which I see has had nearly 3 million views. Pop music is about catchy hooks, marketing/media exposure, looking right and connecting with the the audience - it's always been that way. Madonna is in another league to Kylie because she's had one of the most successful pop careers in pop history.

I'd class them both as entertainers more than they are singers..
I still love some of Madonna's early stuff I guess cos I grew up with it and that's the first "music" I heard.

I remember when I was a kid I used to love Madonna's song 'La Isla Bonita'.. but the part when she goes "when a girl loves a boy and a boy loves a girl" used to kinda piss me off. Cos I couldn't relate to it, I guess.. Now I know why! I just remembered that!

I wonder who nominated Kylie for her OBE? I'm not a fan as I agree with andyp... she's a showperson not a singer, just like a certain Robbie "no career" Williams - can't sing but wins people over with a big expensive "show"!

As for the breast cancer, it's a horrible disease, but she's not the only one who's suffered from it but it seems that she's the only one who is ever 'recognised' as having had it... what about others like Sheryl Crow, Anastacia, Melissa Etheridge - where are their mentions on the breast cancer survivor front eh???

I quite agree!....but there's good pop music and there is rubbish pop music. Growing up in the fifties/sixties we had some really great pop music..it was 'pop' music, not 'programmed' music like nowadays. Put Kylie or Madonna on stage WITHOUT the electronics/flashing lights/enhancements and they'd be lost.
Put Dusty, Dionne, Martha, Tina & Ronnie on stage without the same, and they can still SING! That's the difference as far as I'm concerned.

Brian,

You're talking about some of the greatest female voices of all time. In which case I agree 100%. My point was about pure pop rather than true top of the mountain artistry. I wouldn't dream of putting Kylie anywhere close to any of the singers you've named. They're amongst my own favourites of all time. And, for me, it's Dusty and Ronnie definitely because I can still listen to them over and over and it's like the first time.

I don't think Kylie is rubbish or crap. But the benchmarks here are different. It's not about the technical quality of the voice here or about profound talent that will last forever. It's more about pure pop by which I mean ephemeral delicious sensation. 'Sugar Sugar' by the anonymous 'Archies' for instance (for me anyway) is a great pure pop song:

Jimmy Rodgers (number 7 1957), although the original recording was by The Weavers who didn't get a hit on it.
Perhaps Kylie should consider ruining this like she did with Little Anthony's 'Tears on my pillow'?

The Searchers did indeed hit no#2 UK with Tony Hatch's Sugar & Spice in 1964: the group had hit no#1 with their debut a cover of the Drifters' Sweets For My Sweet & altho the followup Sweet Nothins did pretty much SFA they decided to dip in the sugar bowl one last time with S&S which became their first US chart entry albeit with a mild no#44 peak (the US bubblegum group the Cryan' Shames had their career record with a '66 remake that peaked at no#49). There is a dance version of Sweets for My Sweet courtesy of the queen of 70s Britpop/disco Tina Charles:
