National Treasure - Dusty Springfield (the UK learnt the hard way that Dusty is a jewel in our crown)

National Embarrassment : Amy Winehouse (she's an awful advert for the UK but if she turns things around she'll be a national treasure too in time)

I agree Memphis - just proves how fickle we all are though, doesn't it? ...I guess though the difference between the two is that Dusty, BECAUSE of the era she was from, was able to do things 'In Private', whereas Amy's indiscretions/sorrows/addictions are splattered all over the media for all to see .

The press were part of the reason why Dusty left this country.

As for Amy - she needs a good kick up the what's it - her career had hardly taken off before she screwed it up. She really is a mess in every sense of the word, she must get her act together or she's going to lose everything. To be honest I no longer have any time for her.

Let's just remember that judging a book by it's cover is never the best way forward in life......just appreciate the quality of Amy's voice [at least when sober] and let's try not to deny her the accolade of being a singer of note! Two women, different eras, both with a special vocal talent.....if we only ever heard the voice and never saw the person or heard anything of their lifestyle [rather like no-one ever saw who really sang the Boney M songs] then by what criteria would we judge that person? Walking in other's shoes for a mile or two again, springs to mind. Be gentle people, that's all and let's hope Amy makes it through.

Moi!

Whilst I appreciate everyones thoughts and comments betwixt, between, and about Dusty /Amy, that wasn't the point of this thread.

Any other NTs or NE's...

Unless you know something I don't Janie I am unaware of any embarassment Dusty caused.
As far as I am concerned she always behaved like a lady.

We're talking at cross purposes here Karl - my fault for going too far away from the subject of the thread, I fear . I responded to your comment which didn't mention anything about embarrassment caused by anybody . I'm simply saying that for many people, myself included, they felt that what happened when Dusty went to the States (and we don't need to reiterate those things here) suggested that she also needed a swift kick up the proverbial, that she was also throwing her life and talent away. Most people I knew around the time, who were nothing to do with showbusiness btw, were fully aware of Dusty's 'troubles' so its not as if the world was ignorant of a lot of what went on........Dusty and Amy though have to be put in their historical context...how interesting it would have been if they had lived in the same era .

Sorry Carole but this is a bit interesting as well....we'll maybe have to start up another thread for Dusty and Amy

I was much younger then and I admit very judgemental in certain circumstances, and that was reflected in my feelings. Life has thrown its wobblies at me as the years have gone by and I am now a whole lot more understanding of the position that people find themselves in/land themselves in.....the expression that MICBO referred to about walking in others shoes for a mile or two sums it up for me. Another one for me is 'there but for the grace of god' .

Hmm.... Canada's national embarrassment is its' so-called military.

Canada's national treasure? Um, hockey I suppose. Celine Dion is alright too. And Mike Myers.

To go off topic here again, yes sadly and unfortunately Dusty had some difficult years, but she cleaned herself up in the end. Will Amy ever do that? Also IMHO Amy has a mimimal amount of talent; I must admit I never completely understood what all the excitement was about. Dusty on the other hand, IS the most talented singer the UK has ever produced (make that the world as far as I am concerned).

National Treasure(s): Most of the Coronation Street cast

National emabrrassments : Most of the East Enders cast (but not Babs or June Brown/Dot Cotton)

I included Dusty and Amy because of the similarities. I agree with Janie's comments. Amy gets slagged off and Dusty is forgiven because it was all so long ago (she's a bit of pop music saint nowadays and was always more lovable/likable than Amy) and we didn't have to see her pain and chaos in the papers everyday.

And Carole I sympathise with you. You try and start a reasonable thread and look what happens! Someone has to throw Amy into the mix and all hell breaks loose!

Apologies to Carole again for being off topic maybe we need to start another national thread, but I think it's great the way we all can share an open conversation.

I just read that Amy is pregnant with twins. I sure hope not, we don't need anymore drug addicted children born into this world. I worked in the child abuse scene for ten years and will just say it's an awful thing to happen and see.
