...singing voice, past, present (or future!) in your opinion, most resembles Dusty's?..

Were there?/Is there?/ is there likely to be?....

Geez this is my third attempt to answer your quesiton Carole. Both of my previous attempts must be floating in cyberspace somewhere Do you think Dusty feels like playing a few games now

Beyond a doubt for me, the answer is Katy Setterfield. She sang better than ever at the Legends Concert in Las Vegas.

Madeline Bell I think has a Dusty sound about her voice.

I disagree about Katy.

She certainly seems to sounds like Dusty initially and especially if you were not an avid fan (I thought she was spot on when I watched the programme) but after rediscovering Dusty and hearing Katy again, I think she has a lower register key than Dusty (more like Cher singing Dusty than Dusty). But I can't think of any singer that sounds like the definitive Dusty.

The early (1st solo album) Dusty was less of a unique voice (more powerful though)and easier to imitate I would say.

It's that voice...just listen to the voice

I can't think of anyone! Madeline does a little, and Katy does a little, but no one really sounds like her.. I don't think anyone ever will.

Strange that you should mention Cher John, cos of course Katy can also imitate Cher... I've seen her do it and she does it well....So that adds up.

I agree with the Madeleine suggestion as well.

I agree with Sara but for me Madeline is like listening to Dusty's little sister. She can sing a variety of styles and her albums are quite diverse though not as diverse as Dusty's. I also hear in some songs the influence of Dusty and especially when Madeline lowers her voice I feel a Dustyish emotional connection.

There are so many different dimensions to Dusty's voice and her interpretations that no-one can come close. Dusty is a one-off genius. I like other velvet textured female voices, for instance, Cassandra Wilson (jazz) Cleo Laine (jazz and pop), Diana Krall (jazz and pop) but they're one or two dimensional in comparison with Dusty.

I didn't watch 'The One and Only' shows properly. I was doing something else when I heard Katy sing 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me'. I did a double take and had to watch because she was so very good and so powerful - she deserved to win. I also liked her version of 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself'. 'Preacher Man' and the rest didn't impress me (as Dusty) but she sure can sing.

John, I have to ask you if you ever heard Katy Setterfield sing in person? I seen her perform live twice, once at Dusty Day and once in Vegas. Her sang better than ever in Vegas and sounded VERY much like Dusty, IMO. I agree that her voice is a bit lower than Dusty's. I must also add that Dusty's voice is truly unique and that there never will be another Dusty. Again, IMHO Katy comes the closest to anything I have ever heard. I cannot stress enough how much she sounded like Dusty in Las Vegas and you did not even notice that Dusty's voice is a bit higher pitched. Hope that is not a contradiction. Guess I am trying to say I have noticed in the past that Katy's voice is a bit lower, but it was NOT obvious in Las Vegas. My friend and I truly felt "magic" in the air that night during the concert. Her performances seem to get better and better and she has even come a long way since "The One And Only".

When Katy return to England, I urge all my Brit friends to go and see her, wish I could go myself.

I think Madeline Bell is fantastic singer and a wonderful person. However to me, Dusty is Dusty and Madeline is Madeline. I really do not hear any similarities. Just wondering since Madeline is singing on so many of Dusty's songs, that perhaps we do automatically associate Madeline with Dusty voices together.

Just voicing my opinion!

Marty

Madeline is the closest in 'sound'
Hanne Boel and Renee Geyer are closest in 'style' and 'feel' for choosing the songs.
Just one thing - many have been compared, but

THERE IS ONLY ONE DUSTY
THERE WILL EVER BE ONLY ONE DUSTY
NO ONE WILL EVER SURPASS HER

As far as voices that resemble Dusty's among the Britgirls I'd cite Julie Driscoll & Lulu: stateside Bobbie Gentry & Verdelle Smith an Afro-American singer who topped the Australian charts in '66 with Tar & Cement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUmtX9w99aE

Some years ago I was at the Royal Concert hall with Madeline Bell, spent the afternoon with her in the coffee shop then she was asked to go onstage for her sound check. Madeline asked us to come along and we stood in the wings and watched her, one of the songs she sang was "I Only Wanna Laugh".

Later when she did the show I realised that Dusty did indeed learn from Madeline, just way's Madeline used her voice and Dusty sometimes used her's the same way - two great song stylists. Wouldn't it have been great if the two had appeared together singing a duet on one of Dusty' tv shows?

I can't think of any other singer who resembles Dusty.I think Dusty's voice was and still is unique. As I have only limited opportunities to listen to music,I only listen to Dusty,s divine singing.

Chris what do you mean you only have limited opportunities to listen to music? Surely you listen to other people rather than Dusty? Your musical taste must be very limited then!

Hi Reputation,

That was a great memory of Madeline to share here. Thanks. Dusty and Madeline were a great music match weren't they? They probably learnt a lot from each other. I think it would have been great if they'd have recorded a duets album as well as sung together in concert. I'm going to compile an album myself by collecting the tracks they recorded together. I love 'I'm Gonna Make You Love Me' because that's about as close to a duet as I've got so far.

This is an interesting thread. I've had to give it a few days' thought, and although it's true that there's only one Dusty, if I had to pick someone I would certainly consider Roberta Flack. Sometimes.

Hi Linda

That's such a great song as sung by Roberta. It's one of the songs I wish Dusty had covered plus Roberta's beautiful slowed down version of 'Will You Still Love Me Tommorrow' which was the B side of this great single. I've got it stashed away somewhere... Dusty must have loved these versions too.

Good choice. Great voice.

To Brian
I'm a dane like Hanne Boel and know a little about her singing and as you write she sounds a bit like Dusty But her voice is more dark /powerful and her feeling for music is more soulful
She had made 13 cd's and is very popular in scandinavia BUT her major skills is as a backing voice for most of the nordic singers
you can her her voice on over 100 of the danish /swedic male/female
top singers through the last 15 years !
she have made some " DUSTY " tracks and is a great fan of her way of singing (her live concert's always have some of dusty's tunes)
try if you don't know her version of son of... and mockinbird

Keld - thanks for the information! I have ALL 13 cd's and simply ADORE Hanne's version of SOAPM. Other favourites are 'Soundtrack of a night','Starting all over again' and 'End of our road'.
I would be grateful though, if you can let me know when the next Hanne album is released!

Brian.

Call me stupid, but I think Bobbie Gentry singing 'Ill Never Fall In Love Again' sounds like Dusty.
