Its our Max's birthday today - he's 7. Please say a prayer for my boy as he is really so very poorly at present. We don't know if he will pull through. We are having to feed him through a tube in the back of his neck which links directly to the oesophagus. He has lost 18 kilos in weight.....it will be a long, hard battle.
Here he is in all in glory ......

As someone who has just added two more dogs to our house, there is nothing in the world that can bring you more joy, than the love of a dog. Janie - I really hope Max pulls through and gets better soon - he is a lovely chap.

I really appreciate everyone's good wishes (as does the boy himself - he's not up to posting as you can imagine ).
Sara, he has been diagnosed with lymphangiestasia and helicobacter gastritis. Basically a significant part of his gut has developed abnormalities leading to severe inflammation plus gawd only knows what. It is entirely treatable but the inflammation is so severe that his consultant said that the 'l' word 'might represent a poor prognosis' (that's what she wrote ).
We've just got to hope that his system will cope with the medication and food - he has refused to eat by mouth for what must be nearly a month now which was why they had to fit the feeding tube. Even through that though, we simply can't get him to take what he needs as he started to vomit it all up. We are now on a regime whereby we have to feed him a small amount through the tube every hour! We have to slowly build up the quantity but its not quick enough to stop him losing weight - currently half a kilo each couple of days. Clearly that can't go on. He is only now on about a third of what he requires even to maintain weight, talk about adding it. We have been advised though that we mustn't hurry the process as it would set him back so much if he started his vomiting again - I know he wouldn't be able to get through then.
I've just given him a load of meds.......we've now got to quickly get a meal down us and then another Maxy Waxy feed is on the agenda .
I'm happy to report he is being such a brave boy because what he hasn't gone through is no odds to anybody.
Thank you all once again.......

Many thanks for your good wishes .
We had a bit of a set back last night and ended up at the vets at 10 o''clock! Poor Max had to have a couple of jabs and the veterinarian had huge difficulty finding any flesh to inject into .Looks like on top of everything he may have developed aspiration pneumonia. His meds though are taking care of it but we've now had to go back to square one with his feeding regime - as soon as we try to up the amount he has he brings it back up again!
He is still refusing food by mouth so we are praying that the meds reduce the inflammation sufficiently for his appetite to return sooner rather than later. Sadly, if they don't, there is the distinct possibility that we may have to make the decision that all pet owners dread having to make.........NOT thinking that though cos My Boy is a FIGHTER!!!!

JANIE I'm not sure if its relevant to Max's case but i can remember a vet recomending a liqid protein substance called "Minamino" its used by body builders to build up muscle etc and i think its available from boots the chemists http://www.ayrtons.com/products.htm we used it on the farm dogs when they were run down and off their food and i can renmember that one of the stable girls adding it the feed for her hunter, bought his appetite back and built him back up again-- have a word with your vet-i expect he/she will be able to advise further- i have been racking my brains since sunday to remember the name of it
