I know I could have made this a subset of Brand New Me, but I didn't want it to get glossed over! A big fave of mine is "Joe" which I believe is a Gamble-Huff comp as most of BNM is. Dee Dee Sharp (Mashed Potato Time) is married to one of them. They were leaders in establishing "The Philadelphia Sound". Any, back to "Joe". What an unusual song!! Dusty gets to shows off several of her vocal ranges & the background girls (which I believe include Cissy Houston) get to go to town! I think if you were someone who had been devastated by a guy named Joe that you could play this song about 5 times while you were soaking your wrists in warm water with the razor blade!!!LOL Maybe this little rap will make ya listen to "Joe" a little differently and appreciate it's unique flavor. Also Two Daddy Duke bon mots! First is a test of how far to Mars your music Knowledge goes.....Do you know who Yma Sumac is?? Also Kids, I have a Judy Garland story that I have never posted on any site! Today my pain pills seem to be working so I may post that today. (You have to understand that Daddy Duke HATES to type, so if you read this please take one second to leave a little reply. I would be ever so grateful! Love, Keith

Can't say I did know who Yma Sumack is, but I googled it and this is what I found...

Yma Sumac (September 13, 1922 – November 1, 2008)

Yma Sumac was the stage name of a Peruvian singer named Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo. When still a child in rural Peru, she attracted notice for her extraordinary voice, and joined the Compañía Peruana de Arte in the early 1940s.

Also found a spelling of Uma.

Marty

PS. To all my friends out there, I have known Keith for many years through different forums and we have become good friends. He calls me Tulip and I call him P U S S Ycat, because he has something like 14 cats! (The sensors on here have a dirty mind, LOL! The caps and spaces was the only way I could type it) Hope that was OK to say!

Keith I've known who Yma Sumac is since I was a child and I remember my mum telling me her name was spelled backwards and she was Amy Camus - she had an incredible vocal range (Pre Cleo Laine) and I think she had ancestry to the Incas. Her albums are now on cd and I remember one sleeve where she was made up like an Inca Princess.

What made you ask this, are you a fan?

I cna't believe it!!! a Whole post on "Joe" & Karlos & Marty answer the Yma Sumac question, not surprised as I know they know their music, But thet Sumac question was geared to the young'ins! Just a little test to see how obscure their knowledge we, as she is prettyobscure & also pretty outrageous! And even when I begged, no one replied to "Joe"!!! Oh well. keith

Much as I would like to think I'm a young 'un, I know I ain't and that's the reason I didn't reply to your question Keith - I just knew you weren't aiming it at me .

Btw, obscure though certain aspects of my knowledge may be I'm afriad I had no notion who Yma was.

Anyways, I can't stand to see a grown man beg so I thought the very least I could do was to post on your thread . 'Joe' has yet to grow on me I'm afraid, even after all these decades . However, that having been said, in the light of what you say Keith, maybe I'll sit and listen to it again with 'new ears'.

Cheers my dear ...........looking forward to that Judy Garland post.

Keith doncha know better than to ask TWO question in ONE post? We are so easily confused ya know!!!!

OK I replied to Yma Sumac so now for "Joe", yes it's a song I've always liked as I like the lyrics "Catch A Plane On A Runway" etc but I wouldn't say it's one of my all time best Dusty numbers, From Dusty With Love or Brand New Me depending on which country you're from is a nice album without being a knockout, to come after the sublime Memphis it was a bit of a let down although there are some great orchestrations on that album. Again it seemed to be ahead of it's time.

Keith I'm with Janie on this one. Joe has yet to grow on me, even after all these decades. It's not one of my must "skip" songs but not even on my top 100 either, maybe 101- A Brand New Me, is an album I rarely play.

Hey Janie, Keith and Karl, lets keep the age thing out of here

earned it, so I am a revived 45, a blast from the past a golden oldie as I previously said and a re-cycled teenager.

I adore this song so much that I have set it as my mobile ringtone. It starts with the "I've been searching here and there..." and concludes with the chorus. It also helps that my name is Joe and the song lyrics have to do with trying to get ahold of someone, much like when you call them on the phone!

There is also a youtube clip showing a fantastic live performance of this from some television show in the early 1970s.

Dee Dee Sharp did indeed marry Ken Gamble in 1967; they divorced in 1980. Dee Dee feels Gamble actually hampered her recording career as he didn't want a working wife.

The background vocals on all Dusty's Gamble-Huff sessions are attributed to the house vocalists at Sigma Sound who were known as the Sweethearts of Sigma comprising Carla Benson, Evette Benton and the late Barbara Ingram; from 1967 the trio were an omnipresence on Philly recordings for almost twenty years their finest showcase perhaps being on Lou Rawls' You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine.

As I mentioned in the Gamble/Huff sessions thread, Jackie Moore had a hit in 1973 when she recorded over the Sweet Charlie Babe track Dusty had cut for Gamble & Huff in 1970. Jackie actually had a single of Joe released in 1974 likely also cut with Dusty's track - at least with Joe Dusty's original has been preserved.

I just heard a clip of Jackie Moore's version of "Joe" and I say Dusty still owns the song, no contest!
