Dusty's recordings for Gamble Huff Productions were made over three sessions at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia in 1970; Thom Bell was the arranger. The February 12 session yielded Goodbye & Sweet Charlie Babe - the February 18: Something For Nothing. On April 6 Dusty recorded Cherished, Summer Love, I Wanna Be A Free Girl & The Richest Girl Alive.
BTW Dusty's vocal was erased from the master of Sweet Charlie Babe to facilitate the 1973 recording of the song by Jackie Moore for whom it was a #42 hit.
Why oh why would anyone erase a Dusty vocal from the master of any song? Surely they could have found a way to preserve the original master whilst allowing Jackie Moore to record her own version of the song.
I assume "Something For Nothing" has not yet leaked or been released?
Something For Nothing is included on Love Song a 2001 Rhino-Atlantic compilation which also features Richest Girl Alive, Summer Love & Goodbye.
I remember Jackie Moore's Sweet Charlie Babe from the mid-70s & was very surprised to learn Dusty had recorded on the same track in 1970 as to me it exemplifies the golden age of Philly dance music which I wouldn't have dated earlier than 1972. While Jackie acquits herself credibly on the song I can imagine it would be better suited for a lighter Pop/Soul voice like Dusty's. As far as the lyrical content goes it's not what I'd expect from Dusty - anyone who thinks W&H isn't PC hasn't listened to SCB! Of course in any case it's a shame Dusty's vocal was disposed of.
