On my recent Irish trip I saw the official biography on singer Joe Dolan and really enjoyed reading it.
I was always aware of Joe's music especially Make Me An Island * You're Such A Good Looking Woman, what I did not know was that for 40 years Joe worked and toured endlessley and also made many albums & singles topping the charts in Ireland many times.
Joe played Las Vegas a few times and was offered a residency there for awhile which he turned down as he did not want to be away from his beloved Ireland for so long, he was also invited to Russia to perform as his music was very popular there and he was amazed at the wonderful reception he got from the audience.
Sadly Joe was far from well on his last stage appearance and he did not want to go on, but rather than disappoint everyone he did but after a few songs he did not have the strength to carry on and told his fans that was the first time in 40 years he had ever had to do that - he left the stage in tears as he felt he had left everyone down.
Joe was a real character and did a lot for charity which was not publicised, he had an amazing voice and indeed some opera singers were amazed at the notes he could hit and hold.
The book has renewed my interest in his music and I am currently enjoying his cd's
By the way Dusty was also mentioned in the book as it was reported he thought about recording Spooky, I wonder if their paths ever crossed?
Sadly Joe passed away a month after that performance but his health had been in decline for some time and he left us on December 26 2007.
