For some reason, we aint never had a discussion about the man with the big specs, big voice and from what I ever saw... little personality.

So what did/do ya think of Roy Orbison?

Another singer taken away from us far too early.

Roy Orbison was one of the few artists who could be called 'unique'.
You could always recognise his voice after about 2 seconds of putting the needle on the record. (We are talking 'good old days here'!).
With a career of over 35 years he made some of the most memorable pop records ever. He was consistantly in the charts during the sixties - 'classics' such as Only the lonely, Running scared, Oh pretty woman, Dream baby, In dreams, Cryin', Blue bayou, It's over, Too soon to know etc, etc. During the seventies and early eighties his recording output was not so fruitful, although he still toured and played to sell-out crowds & appeared on tv frequently. Just before he died suddenly in 1988 he was on the verge of being 're-discovered' and had already recorded three more, what were to be huge hits in You got it, She's a mystery to me and I drove all night.
Along with his solo work he also became part of THE TRAVELING WILBURYS, along with George Harrison, and had hits with them.
Personally I think Roy is in the 'top ten' of the most influential of the last 50 years, and his music like Dusty's is 'timeless'

Brian.

I always think it's very sad when an artist is just about to re-emerge again with some great material when they suddenly die.

It happened to Elvis, John Lennon, Roy Orbison.

Roy had a very unique voice and made some knockout records, but his last few albums were some of the best ever, however his old hits were wonderful too. There is hardly a week goes by that Oh Pretty Woman is not on the radio.

Roy Orbison was/is one of my favourite male singers.
I just love Its Over, Blue Bayou, In Dreams, Pretty Woman, Crying, Only The Lonely.
The list just goes on and on.
He had a unique voice . He comes across as a very gentle man with no airs and graces.
There have been programmes about him on Sky's Performance channel recently showing him doing live performances -- well worth watching.

Has anyone seen Roy's concert A Black & White Night? Bruce Springsteen is playing for him in the band and he looks so proud to be there.

Yes, it is Carole. I just bought it and it is shown often on Public Broadcasting Stations during their fundraisers. Lots of 'names' playing with Roy, and the backing singers are KT LANG, Bonnie Raitt and Jennifer Warnes.

I also absolutely love 'I Drove All Night' but I haven't got Roy's recording of it, only Cyndi Lauper's.....mind you, she sings it brilliantly IMHO

'You Got It' is definitely my favourite. I remember it was in this really sweet film I saw years ago, can't remember it's name, and I wanted to find the song for ages. It had Drew Barrymore and Whoopi Goldberg in it, AND Carpenters songs

Thank you so much for this Sara - strange, another coincidence to tell of. I haven't heard this recording for absolutely ages. When I was in the car yesterday travelling to Henley I had one of the CD's playing away (VERY loudly of course ) and on came Roy with this particular recording.

I hadn't realised in was in the collection, even!

Claudette was his first wife, wasn't she? If my memory serves me correctly she was tragically killed many, many years ago now........probably in the 60's?
