I love them both best Gonna have to say 'Dusty In Memphis' though cos it's so beautiful and it just means more to me.. ECUD is amazing too though. They're completely different albums! Are you still talking to me now, Carole?

NO, I'm not!...Only kidding.
I prefer ECUD because I liked it from the first time I heard it. However,DIM had to grow on me.
...but Individual tracks, like ' Just One Smile' and 'I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore' are SUPERB.

'ECUD' EVERY time!
A record so far advanced for a British girl singer in 1965. 'DIM' is also a great record btw

ECUD will ALWAYS be my favourite album, it was also the first Dusty album I bought. From the opening Won't Be Long it's just sheer perfection all the way through!
I love all Dusty's albums just some more than others, DIM I feel often eclipses other greats like Definitely & Where Am I Going. |

Ya mean you didn't buy A Girl Called Dusty--Rep!!
I love them both but ECUD just abit more because it was way ahead of its time. Memphis does have great tracks but somehow not the impact the other one had on me.

| By the way Memphis is still a great album but very different, Dusty was working with a new sound, different musicians etc, it's just a shame that album did not get the sales it deserved at the time. |

There are just some albums that become more than a sum of their parts, more than a song collection - there's a tone, a mood, a point of view, an attitude carried over from song to song.
ECUD is a collection of great songs, DIM is an interwoven whole.
Other exceptional albums: Marianne Faithfull's "Broken English", Carole King's "Tapestry", Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue".
Can you think of anymore? |

They are both great albums.I prefer DIM because Dustys voice sounds so soulful on virtually all the tracks and the musicians backing her are amazing.

The Memphis album, IMO, requires more attentiveness to fully appreciate. ECUD just jumps out at me, but the talent behind Memphis is subtle.

DUSTY IN MEMPHIS....no contest....
In my own errrrrrrrrrr (if I may so) 'humble' opinion...it's nothing short of a masterpiece, vocally and technically!
The album possesses that rare quality of being able to take the listener on a journey..emotionally and musically...track after track from 'Just a Little Lovin' right through too 'I Can't Make It Alone' it's like one glorious tapestry...each track (for me) invokes different feelings, images and thoughts all bound together tightly by Dusty's voice and the orchestrations.
The story behind the album also gives it that sort of legendary quality:
Rejecting all the songs Wexler recommended for the sessions, Dusty's battle with her nerves and confidence, 'Bespeckled-awkward-shy-destined-to-be-a-librarian' Mary O'Brien from Ealing, London in the deep South...Memphis, Tennessee. Singing in the same recording booth as her heroes, feeling out of her depth, so much to prove to herself and everyone else, refusal to sing a note until she was in New York, flying ash-trays...i never tire of hearing the stories behind the sessions!
I don't know about everyone else but when you think about it, very few albums possess the kind of power and clarity 'Dusty in Memphis' has. Albums like 'Whats Going On?' (Marvin Gaye) and Tapestry (Carole King) are similar. But in terms of charm 'Memphis' is in a league of its own, it cannot be compared with any other.

I'd go for "Dusty In Memphis" if I was absolutely forced to choose (by our resident meanie...Carole ).
It's very hard to compare the two albums...they're quite different from each other. I'd agree though that ECUD is more accessible than "..In Memphis"...the songs just hit you full throttle on "ECUD" - whereas "In Memphis" is more subtle and sophisticated.
If I had to choose between Dusty's U.K. recorded LP's I'd still go for "Where am I Going" though.

I suppose you could say that The Beatles 'Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band' is an interwoven whole.
But, I aint heard anyone ever say it!

The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" is an interwoven whole... but let's not further complicate things.
