I have just been reading in a magazine a list of Motown's favourite hits. The list goes as follows :- 1. What's goin' on - Marvin Gaye 2. Papa was a rollin' stone - The Temptations 3. Superstition - Stevie Wonder 4. I heard it through the grapevine - Marvin Gaye 5. Dancing in the street - Martha & The Vandellas 6. My girl - The Temptations 7. Reach out, I'll be there - Four Tops 8. Cruisin' - Smokey Robinson 9. Please Mr postman - The Marvelettes 10. Cloud nine - The Temptations 11. Baby love - The Supremes 12. Stop! in the name of love - The Supremes 13. The tracks of my tears - The Miracles 14. Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder 15. Let's get it on - Marvin Gaye 16. I was made to love her - Stevie Wonder 17. I want you back - Jackson 5 18. I heard it through the grapevine - Gladys Knight & The Pips 19. You keep me hangin' on - The Supremes 20. Nowhere to run - Martha & The Vandellas 21. Shotgun - Junior Walker & The All Stars 22. Too busy thinking about my baby - Marvin Gaye 23. Money - Barret Strong 24. Ask the lonely - Four Tops 25. I can't get next to you - The Temptations 26. Just my imagination - The Temptations 27. Ball of confusion - The Temptations 28. Endless love - Diana Ross & Lionel Richie 29. Heatwave - Martha & The Vandellas 30. Keep on truckin' - Eddie Kendricks 31. Tears of a clown - The Miracles 32. My guy - Mary Wells 33. Ain't no mountain high enough - Diana Ross 34. Where did our love go - The Supremes 35. War - Edwin Starr 36. Uptight - Stevie Wonder 37. Stubborn kind of fellow - Marvin Gaye 38. You can't hurry love - The Supremes 39. I should be proud - Martha & The Vandellas 40. The Happening - The Supremes 41. I know (I'm losing you) - The Temptations 42. (Come round here), I'm the one you need - The Miracles 43. When I'm gone - Brenda Holloway 44. Remember me - Diana Ross 45. Get ready - The Temptations 46. Don't mess with Bill - The Marvelettes 47. Your precious love - Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell 48. Take me in your arms and love me - Gladys Knight & The Pips 49. I can't help myself - Four Tops 50. Abraham , Martin & John - Tom Clay.
I presume this list is from America? It's a great list, but a little suprising. The Four Tops, despite being one of Motown's 'first division' artists are poorly represented, with their 'classic' "I can't help myself" way down the list. Tom Clay's version of Abraham,M & J makes it above the Marvin Gaye hit version. Martha and the girls 'non-hit' "I should be proud" makes 39, above many a greater hit! One thing that really pleases me is seeing Smokey Robinson's greatest solo hit in the top ten...a far better song than 'Being with you' which was a number one here in the UK. What do YOU think of this list?....is your favourite there? Perhaps you'd like to list your favourites?....say a top twenty?

I'm a "Hitsville USA '59-'72" girl. The list is odd in some ways, but that's to be expected with such a vast selection of artists and hits.
I’m only starting with 15 because I can’t finish a list like this without great angst. I bolded the ones that seem to be ‘missing’ from the list that Brian shared.
Papa was a rollin' stone - The Temptations Nowhere to run - Martha & The Vandellas Abraham, Martin & John – Marvin Gaye Too busy thinking about my baby - Marvin Gaye Heatwave - Martha & The Vandellas Back in My Arms Again – Supremes Stop! in the name of love - The Supremes For Once In My Life – Stevie Wonder Tears of A Clown – Miracles How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You – Marvin Gaye I’ll Second That Emotion – Smokey Robinson / Miracles Dancing in the street - Martha & The Vandellas Just my imagination - The Temptations Same Old Song – Four Tops What Becomes of the Broken Hearted – Jimmy Ruffin

'What Does It Take' (to win your love for me) by Jnr Walker and The All Stars is an obvious missing 'goodie'......I loved that cheeky sax!...

Oh YES....although I've got them on other albums (except a couple) - I thought I should! What is quite amazing are the number of tracks considered NOT GOOD ENOUGH in the sixties, which are too wonderful for words. Has anyone heard 'My business, your pleasure' by Smokey & The Miracles?.....it is truly AWESOME
MOTOWN RULED IN THE SIXTIES - AND IT STILL DOES.

Carole, I haven't been to the Motown Musum in YEARS so my memory is completely faded. It's a fascinating place, though, it's the actual site/house(s) where the recordings were made. They've done their best to preserve all of the original recording equipment and decor. They've also recreated Berry Gordy's quarters, I think. Their website has more information than my memory though. If you have seen the Temptations movie, I believe it was filmed in the actual studio, as have many other motown films.
I'll have to go when the weather's nicer and give a more detailed report. It's only five minutes across the border from Windsor.
