Carole asked the question :- who IS the QUEEN? (between these two)
Firstly I'd like to say I LOVE both women. Luckily I've seen Tina many, many times over the years (first time was 1965!)..Aretha visited the UK very infrequently, and I never got to see her 'live'. I've collected their records throughout their careers. Both are outstanding singers...both have paid their dues...both desreve R-E-S-P-E-C-T, but one thing keeps them apart - ATTITUDE! Aretha has become a real 'diva' ..with her comments and demands. Tina, on the other hand has grown old gracefully (or should that be disgracefully?). Aretha is now living on past glories (but boy there are MANY), but Tina is STILL a force in the recording industry.
For me....in 2008 ...TINA IS QUEEN.
Brian.

I agree, Brian. Tina seems to be very calculated about how, when and where she appears in public and what kind of attitude she portrays when she does so. She doesn't come across as expecting the accolades. Both women are stand-alone, but I find Tina much more endearing as the years go by. Statements such as the one released today by Ms. Franklin disappoint me.

Aretha's "issue" made national news here. The local Detroit stations are sympathetic to Ms. Franklin's complaint, but the national news doesn't take a side on it. She's getting plenty of attention, though.

Tina has a much higher profile in the current public consciousness than Aretha as Tina's period of intense stardom came almost 20 years later than Aretha's & also occurred in the video age for which Tina was far better suited than Aretha. But Tina's being overall more popular doesn't mean Aretha's long-established title of Queen of Soul should be reassigned to her - especially as I've heard Tina herself has stated she doesn't care for R&B music & considers herself a rock singer. Beyonce had mentioned Aretha prior to introducing Tina as "the Queen". If she was reciting a prepared script the Grammys' writers were being less than astute - if Beyonce was using her own words then it's more understandable as she's in a demographic who's far more aware of Tina than of Aretha & is less familiar with Aretha's regal title. Still I can understand Aretha being miffed.

I agree with much of what you say, Richard.
Its easy 'not to be miffed' when your'e not involved.
I declare that: Aretha is the Queen Of Soul, Tina is the Queen of Hearts. Hows that?.. Carole R xx |
