Heard a conversation on the radio regarding Aretha being miffed about Beyonce describing TT as 'The Queen Of Soul'..
As the conversation progressed someone put Gladys Knights name into the pot...and suggested that Shewas/is The Queen Of Soul...And I'm just listening to her now...'Neither One Of Us Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye'...Gladys has soul....
Any road up .. The general consensus was that Aretha should take the 'soul ' crown...
Talking of who were the Soul Queens in waiting.... Mary J. Blige was mentioned plus Duffy and Amy Winehouse.Strangely, there was NO mention of Joss Stone.
You'll be glad to hear that Dusty was NOT left out of the conversation...she was described as the UK best soul singer, up to now.
Two questions:
How does Gladys match up to 'Retha and Tina?
Who is the Soul Queen in waiting?

Gladys is right up there!
This wonderful woman has been singing since she was eight...has NEVER made a bad record...looks even more gorgeous now than any other time in her career... & oozes 'class'.
As for 'Queen in waiting'....do we include 'older' singers, or just the new breed?
Unfortunately the new girls don't really hold a candle to the 'old girls'....the likes of Patti Labelle, Dionne Warwick, Gladys, Etta James, Denise LaSalle, Shirley Brown or Carla Thomas*
*Carla once had an album called 'THE QUEEN ALONE'
Then you get the 'solo' women from the groups - Martha Reeves, Darlene Love, Ronnie Spector, Mary Wilson (a wonderful voice!!) and Shirley Alston.
Can someone tell me WHO can sing 'soul' out of the new ones?..OK - Sharon Jones - I GOT ONE!!

Gladys is amazing, she tops my favourite soul singers along with Tina, Aretha, and Patti. I love to hear the banter back and forth regarding "the queen" and who deserves the title. They all have made their mark.
