Inspiration of Dusty helps land gig in Las Vegas

Katy Setterfield rehearses last week for her role in “Legends in Concert.” She won the three-month run in the show by winning a tribute artist contest on a BBC series.
IF YOU GO
What: “Legends in Concert”
When: 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays
Where: Imperial Palace
Tickets: $53.80 to $70.80; 794-3261 Beyond the Sun Legends in Concert THE HISTORY OF ‘LEGENDS’ “Legends in Concert” turned 25 on May 5.
It started at the Imperial Palace in 1983 with tributes to such artists as Buddy Holly, Janis Joplin, Marilyn Monroe, Bobby Darin and Elvis Presley.
Since then there have been more than 15,000 performances featuring impersonations of 74 celebrities.
The most impersonated act has been Elvis, with 17 performers paying tribute.
“Legends,” produced by On Stage Entertainment, is the longest running independently owned production show on the Strip.
More than 5.4 million fans have attended the performances.
During the past 25 years, “Legends in Concert” has grown from one production in Las Vegas to year-round presentations in Branson, Mo.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and Atlantic City.
The show has traveled to 15 countries on five continents and operates numerous fixed-base, touring, limited-term and private engagements of “Legends in Concert” throughout the world.
Still suffering from jet lag and the heady experience of being named the best tribute artist in Great Britain, Katy Setterfield began rehearsing last week in Las Vegas.
Tonight she begins her three-month engagement with “Legends in Concert” at the Imperial Palace.
The engagement was the grand prize won in February on BBC’s “The One and Only ...” TV series, which starred a cast of performers paying tribute to Elton John, Robin Williams and others. Setterfield’s winning tribute was for Dusty Springfield, the ’60s pop star who died of cancer in 1999.
Setterfield has a long list of tributes in her repertoire. For the TV show, she says, it was a toss-up between doing Springfield or Cher.
“I thought hard,” Setterfield says as she waits to join the cast of dancers in the rehearsal studio. “I have loved Dusty’s music all my life. She inspired me, and means so much to me. The voice is incredible. So I popped for Dusty Springfield, and it was a good decision.”
Setterfield’s timing is perfect. Her appearance coincides with renewed interest in Springfield, one of the top pop stars of the ’60s, whose private life was marked by drug and alcohol abuse and mental problems.
Grammy-winning singer Shelby Lynne released a Springfield tribute, “Just a Little Lovin’,” this year. Nicole Kidman announced she is producing and starring in a film for Fox based on Springfield’s life. All of this has sparked music fans to rediscover Springfield’s catalog and caused a spike in her record sales.
In the “Legends in Concert” production, Setterfield will sing four of Springfield’s most popular songs — “Son of a Preacher Man,” “Wishin’ and Hopin’,” “I Only Want To Be With You” and “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me.”
Her few minutes in the spotlight each night will be like a vacation for Setterfield, who for eight years starred in a touring tribute show called “That’ll be the Day” that involved 16 costume changes and a couple of hours onstage. The cast performed more than 200 one-night engagements across England and Scotland every year.
This isn’t Setterfield’s first trip to Vegas. She was here in 1992 when she won a trip for selling the most Casio keyboards at the music store where she worked in London.
She didn’t see “Legends in Concert” that time around.
“I didn’t know anything about the scene then,” Setterfield says.
When the allotted time for her trip was over, she stayed in the United States and spent nine months touring with a rock band in Florida.
Setterfield began singing and playing keyboards in English pubs when she was 14. “My father took me around,” she says. “He was my roadie.”
After her experience in Florida, she began performing summer shows in England.
“The coastal towns have theaters on piers that have variety shows during the summer season,” Setterfield says. “I did that for several years.”
Then in 2000 she joined the cast of “That’ll be the Day,” a ’50s-through-’70s nostalgia show in which she paid tribute to such artists as Springfield, Cher, Lulu and Tina Turner.
Winning the recent competition has changed Setterfield’s life.
“It turned it upside down,” she says. “After eight years in the nostalgia show it was all I knew. But I have left the show now and have been receiving offers of much better work for much better pay. And there have been a lot of other opportunities.”
The only downside to Setterfield’s victory is that there will be a prolonged separation from her husband, bass player Andy Hodge, with whom she toured in England.
Down the road she hopes to do more recording — she has done three albums to date. And she would like to spend more time touring in the United States, singing her own songs as well as Springfield’s.
“I really love the United States,” she says.

Not so far Paul,
I'm hoping that the BBC have sent a team over there...and they are doing some sort of documentary-style programme.
However, I don't know that they have.

Katys No1 fan.
The last time I saw Katy (which was at her Las Vegas party ) she did say something about the BBC doing a bit of a follow up on her. I regret though, that beyond that fact I don't have any details. I'll e-mail Andy (her husband) to see if there is any news though .

Things are looking very promising for me going to Vegas next month. Of course I'll catch Katy's act when I'm there. I'll probably be able to book it tomorrow morning.

Katy Takes Las Vegas By Storm (from Watford Observer)
http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/news/localnews/display.var.2297839.0.katy_takes_las_vegas_by_storm.php
Singer Katy Setterfield, the Watford FC shareholder who won BBC1's The One and Only show in February, has just claimed her prize.
She opened last week as one of the stars in the Legends in Concert at the Imperial Palace Hotel on the Las Vegas strip.
Before she went, Katy threw a celebration party where she sang along with the other local finalist in the show, Joanne Burrows from Bushey.
Naturally, Katy sang as Dusty Springfield and Joanne as Cher.
The Legends show features a tribute Tina Turner, Blues Brothers, Jay Leno and, of course, Elvis.
Katy shared the stage with them and brought the house down on her opening night with four of the Dusty Springfield songs she had performed in The One and Only.
Katy said: "It was as nerve wracking to open with a great cast like this as it was to have to do a live TV show on a Saturday night but everyone has made me really welcome and it was lovely to be able to be here in Las Vegas at long last after all the excitement of winning the show."
The Imperial Palace Hotel is calling Katy's arrival the Paul Revere Show.
He rode through the streets shouting "The British are coming" and that's just what seems to be happening there.
Every show has a significant proportion of British fans who have called by or even come specially to see Katy.
She said: "It is wonderful to have such support here in America.
"I hope that they all come and see me again when I get back to the UK in September."
Katy will be touring the UK for three months in the autumn.
There is no show booked specifically for Watford but she will be in Stevenage in early September and High Wycombe in October.

Historic house to stage top mock acts
http://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/content/News/story.aspx?brand=ENOnline&category=News&tBrand=enonline&tCategory=news&itemid=NOED29%20May%202008%2015%3A02%3A04%3A370
TRACEY GRAY 29 May 2008 15:00
A historic Georgian house normally home to string quartet orchestras, art exhibitions, and traditional high teas will soon be rocking to the sounds of the underground when a host of top tribute acts take the stage.
The Assembly House, a grade I listed building, is not the Theatre Street venue you might not associate with tributes to the likes of Girls Aloud, Cher, and Tina, Turner, but it is the place where Jack Halpert has decided to hold a series of Tribute to the Stars shows.
Between September and February next year the Assembly House will be home to a series of top tribute acts with the first show, on Thursday, September 18, being kicked off by Take That 2.
There will also be appearances by Girls R Aloud and The Bees Knees, but one of the star attractions at the event will be Katy Setterfield, who stormed to success wining the BBC television series The One and Only, with her impersonation of legendry singer Dusty Springfield. She will be appearing on stage at The Assembly House on April 2, next year.
Mr Halpert, founder of Tribute Attack Promotions which is overseeing the shows, said: “The popularity of the BBC show, the One and Only, has placed tribute acts at the top of the bill, now we want to introduce Norwich to these tribute acts.
“People should come and see them because they have to be seen to be believed and going to see them is a fraction of the price you would have to pay to see the real artist perform.
“There is also a live big band for many of the artists who are performing with the band instead of using backing tracks.”
Some dates people need to look out for include Thursday, October 2, when Girls R Aloud will be playing, and Thursday, October 16, when it will be the turn of The Bees Knees to entertain the crowds.
The show is brought up-to-date on Thursday, November 13 with The Amy Winehouse experience, and on Sunday, November 30 there will be a Bob Marley tribute in the form of Legend.
Sarah Baker, marketing manager at the Assembly House, said: “I suppose the Assembly House is seen as a bit of a more traditional venue with the symphony orchestra and the great hall players through the year but it's quite exciting to target a different and younger audience.
“We're here as a facility for people to use and I think it's quite an exciting idea. I think it shows how far we've come to include all types of performance and visual arts.”
Others set to grace the Assembly House stage include The Police Force on Thursday, December 18, Paul Reason as Robbie Williams on January 8 2009, and on January 22 there promises to be a rock concert not to be missed when both Cher and Tina Turner tribute acts perform on stage.
To book tickets or to find out more contact the Assembly House on 01603 626402 or visit www.assemblyhousenorwich.co.uk
