It could've been the smoking..but she always suffered with her throat.. throughout her career.

I noticed Dusty's speaking voice being huskier near the end of her life, I think the smoking affected her voice and possibly her treatment. I will never udnerstand why she took up smoking later in life. Infact I don't understand great singers smoking at all and yet many of them do it. |

I agree that Dusty's voice got huskier and deeper as she got older, she could no longer hit some of those high notes. I am sure that the smoking most have contributed to this. I never did understand why singers smoked, you would think they would want to take better care of their voices. Dusty possibly took up smoking later in life to eplace one addiction with another. (Just a thought, of course I have no idea of knowing this as fact). Also, a woman's voice does get naturally deeper with age, let's say it a harmonal thing and leave it at that.
I guess it is possible tha her cancer treatments did have something to do it as well.
In DWD without getting into too much detail and touching on an extremely controversial subject, which I am not saying is true or false, it is mentioned that she sustained vocal injuries. Once again, please don't bite my head off for this last comment.

But I think her voice started to go in the late 70s..
Smoking may have helped her cope, don't judge her.

Sara if you had heard Dusty rehearse on stage at Drury Lane you would not say that. I was booking for the final night and could hear her but not see her and I said at the time "Aretha Franklin Eat Your Heart Out"
I saw Dusty twice at Drury Lane and she was fantastic. |

Just to add my thoughts re the 'voice' as it got older..
I think it was starting to resemble Tina Turner's voice.

Well Dusty did say given half the chance she'd throw half her act out and pinch Tina Turner's, but Carole go and wash your mouth out my girl. To say Dusty's voice resembled Tina's is sacrilige. I really like Tina and have seen her live but she doesn't have a pretty voice - Dusty has.
Tina's voice is raw & earthy, but that's what made her great too. |

I prefer her voice later on in some ways to the early 60's when it was very high and she always seemed out of breath.
The more mature voice was good to listen to.
Chemo can affect the voice. Ciggies would have to some extent.

My money is on the fags...look at (or listen to) Deirdre Barlow (Coronation Street actress to the non-Brits on here) lmao! Hmm not sure about chemo affecting vocal chords though.

Chemo can affect the lungs and therefore breathing which can affect the voice. I had a friend who used to sing in amateur productions who did not have the same range afterwards, but this is only one person so it may obviously not have affected Dusty.
Thank goodness her voice lasted as long as it did and we have all this wonderful music.

Listening to Dusty talk is one of my favorites.
It was nice to hear the other things too. I love it when people credit her for introducing Motown to Britain and working hard to get her favorites over to England. That was important and important to note.

I agree that Dusty always had a lovely speaking voice as well as a singing voice; listening to her talk was also music to your ears. Her speaking voice sounded very sweet especially in her younger years. I will also agree that her voice did age and change with time passing. The cigarettes, chemo and anything else you can think of probably contributed to the change. However, I do think we are forgetting something here, she was human (I know that's hard to believe sometimes), we must permit her to age. Think of our own voices from a child to where in life we are currently, your voice does change and mature with the years.

I don't think anyone forgets she was human, it just seems that it changed quite a lot, but I guess maybe it only seems that way because of the length of time her career covered, gaps between albums etc.
