The Massachussetts people have great taste as Haunted reached number one there - another reason why it's my favourite city after my own of course!

Fantastic! The UK charts I used to get so excited about on Sundays in the 70s are nothing compared to these. They're chock full of great hits. They really make me realise how serious the competition was in the USA.

We all know YDHTSYLM was Dusty's only number one single in the UK, but was it number one anywhere else in the world?
Did Dusty have a number one anywhere with another recording?
In the sixties our local paper (The Oxford Mail) published each week Oxford's 'top ten' records - Dusty made it to number one on two other occasions with IOWTBWY and IJDKWTDWM for one week each.

As far as I can ascertain Dusty's only no#1 position on a national chart besides YDHTSYLM in the UK was with the Springfields in Australia where Silver Threads & Golden Needles was no#1 for the weeks of September 1, 8 & 15 1962. YDHTSYLM peaked at no#2 in Australia (that was also the Oz peak for Wishin' & Hopin'). YDHTSYLM had a no#4 peak in the US, Canada & Ireland (the US peak is as per Billboard - rival music industry mag Cash Box afforded YDHTSYLM a no#3 peak).

28. Last Train To Clarksville - Monkees --
29. See See Rider - Animals --
30. All I See Is You - Dusty Springfield --

Dusty is one of only three vocalistes on the chart, the others being the similar-sounding Verdelle Smith (Tar & Cement) & Sandy Posey whose Born a Woman would vie with Dusty's YDHTSYLM for the Best Rock & Roll Solo Vocal Performance Grammy: Bobby Darin's If I Were a Carpenter & Nancy Sinatra's These Boots Were Made For Walkin' would also be contenders in this field taken by Eleanor Rigby which was entered as a solo performance by Paul McCartney despite (as evidenced in this survey) being credited to the Beatles (who never won a Grammy). Incredibly - IMO - Born a Woman was also nominated for the Female Vocal Performance Grammy while YDHTSYLM was not (These Boots are Made For Walkin' also ran in this field as did albums by Ella Fitzgerald & Barbra Streisand: Eydie Gorme's If He Walked Into My Life was the winner). I'd never guess that Ms Posey recorded at the American Studios that would give us DIM: see what you think! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtYdq62iiGM

That Sandy Posey Song is one of the most depressing dittys I've ever heard.

I much prefer Peggy Lees W-O-M-A-N...

I don't imagine Dusty would have particularly enjoyed Born a Woman but she might have approved of the singer's coiff! Born a Woman actually was a hit in the UK entering the Top 50 the same week as All I See is You: its peak was only no#24 but the similar followup Single Girl not only reached no#15 in '67 but was re-released in '75 with a no#35 peak. Another song Sandy cut in '67: Sunglasses, was a no#18 UK hit for Tracey Ullman in '84.

BTW I was (gasp!) mistaken when I said Sandy cut her own tracks at American Studios where Dusty in Memphis would be recorded - rather Sandy's own tracks were cut in Nashville. However Sandy was produced by Chips Moman who owned American Studios where she'd initially worked as a receptionist graduating to session singing & demo cutting: it was Sandy's demo of Born a Woman that elicited Moman's interest in recording Sandy herself. Sandy's extensive body of session work - among others she backed Bobby Bare, Bobby Goldsboro, Elvis Presley(Kentucky Rain, The Wonder of You, In the Ghetto), Tommy Roe, Skeeter Davis, Joe Tex & Percy Sledge (When a Man Loves a Woman) - suggests a vocal talent perhaps more substantial than her hits indicate: like Dusty's friend Lesley Gore the double-tracking used to give Sandy's vocals a trademark sound likely also somewhat disguise her vocal strength.

Sandy's Pop career was basically over by the end of '67. In the 70s she resumed recording focussing on the Country field meeting with desultory success: she also performed at county fairs & similar venues with her Elvis impersonator husband. Sandy recorded a bluegrass album in 2002 & reportedly has a number of recent recordings she'll be making available through I-tunes & other internet download services.
