I really don't like Bobbie Gentry's version of this, I remember being shocked when I first heard it, I thought it was that bad But I heard The Carpenters version first, and Karen is amazing Ooh, and Dionne Warwick's version is brilliant too

I think the Bobbie Gentry clip is plausible.

That's the version that comes to mind first for me. I love it.

Plausible???
I just think that the tone of BG'S voice on that song is like Dusty's.

There is a girl singer who used to be in "Jefferson Starship' her name was Grace Slick. I thought that in the song "Nothings gonna stop us now" not so much in the verses but in the chorus she was very much like Dusty. She was born the same year as Dusty 1939 but stop singing when she was in her forties as she thought she was too old!!! Cheers Douggie...........

That's a good one too Douggie. I love Grace Slick and all her variations of Jefferson-Starship-Airplane-Starship etc. She has quite a catalogue and the progression in her music is interesting to follow.

I LOVE Bobbie Gentry singing 'I'll Never Fall In Love Again'. In the old days when I had a passing liking for Dusty's voice I thought Bobbie was just as good - on this song. I still think her voice is great and I have a couple of her compiltations. She was another cool woman who didn't do well as the 60s turned into the '70s.
After I'd been able to listen to more Dusty and those Bacharach covers I wondered why it wasn't Dusty that recorded this song at Burt's request. It's like Burt has asked Bobbie to sing it like Dusty and even as if there was a Dusty demo on hand. I've often wondered why the recording relationships with Burt and Carole King seemed to ebb away. Was it because Dusty wasn't having hits anymore...
I also think Dusty copied Bobbie's look a little when she had that big hair around the time of 'Son of a Preacher Man' and the Burt Bacharach special. And I think Bobbie's success was one of the reasons Dusty chose to sing 'Preacher Man' (this sounds very much like a Bobbie song to me).

I don't think Bobbie sounds out of tune on INFILA: her voice has a bruised sound which some might not find attractive - & to be honest I'm surprised that the song was a UK no#1 especially as the Brits gave such a lukewarm reception to Ode to Billie Joe. BTW the week Bobbie topped the charts with INFILA Dusty's Am I the Same Girl was in the last of its 4 weeks in the Top 50 at no#46 dropping from its no#43 peak.
In case anyone missed my post on Bobbie's July 27 birthday here's her take on SOAPM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtQEXAaLNs8; the composers John Hurley & Ronnie Wilkins also wrote the title cut from Bobbie's Touch 'Em With Love album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhXCZ_4K63k |

Thanks Sweetbaby. Dusty beats Bobbie easily. I'm surprised that Bobbie doesn't do this song justice. She sounds like she didn't want to sing it. Someone must have told her to.

Sorry Reputation if I upset you.In my lifetime I have listened to all types of music:classical,Jazz,Pop music etc .Unfortunately I had neglected listening to Dusty for the last 35 years! At present Dusty supplies all my musical needs with the power and variety of her performances.

FYI, I think Bobbie DID do a cover of SOAPM. She is another I like a lot, believe when the '70s came along, she just quit while on top, basically. Hasn't really been in the public at all since.
As for who...well, we can all agree that a "next Dusty" is a tall order. Seems her contemporaries are the ones who would keep that kind of music alive. Moreso cause the music industry today doesn't exactly breed stars based on musical ability alone. The best I can think of is to think of people who mirror her work ethic and love and respect for music. |

I thought so. Is it me or does she try to be like Dusty in doing her song? |

I think Bobbie's being herself on the song - the result sounds like Dusty. |
